Photo by Al Kordesch, CC0.]] The tree may reach about 15 m and bears globose berries approximately 2โ2.5 cm across. Young leaves can be orange to reddish before turning green. Mature fruit is pink to red and may be acidic or astringent. == Distribution and habitat == Kew places the species broadly across Malesia and nearby Papuasia, while USDA GRIN gives a narrower Indonesian distribution. PROSEA notes that it is known mainly from cultivated or semi-cultivated populations, so the precise wild origin remains uncertain. It is cultivated as a fruit tree, including on sandy soils and at elevations reported to about 1,300 m.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]] == Cultivation == Use fertile, well-drained soil that can hold moisture without remaining saturated. The documented use of sandy soils makes drainage a useful priority, while the humid tropical distribution supports regular moisture during active growth. Full sun should support the best fruiting in warm climates; young plants may need temporary protection from harsh midday exposure. === Soil and water === Sandy soils are documented in PROSEA, but no defensible species-specific pH or irrigation schedule was located. Keep the root zone aerated and evenly moist rather than permanently wet. === Sun and humidity === Warmth and atmospheric humidity suit the species. Full sun is the practical fruiting target after establishment; protect young plants from harsh exposure and frost. A precise humidity percentage is N/A. === Seasonal changes === PROSEA records JanuaryโFebruary flowering in Java followed by fruit maturation after about four to five months. That calendar is regional, not universal. Additional flowering flushes are possible in climates without a pronounced cool or dry season, but repeated or year-round flowering is not adequately documented. == Propagation == Propagation is documented by seed, air-layering, and budding. Seed can produce variation; air-layering or budding is preferable when preserving a known fruiting selection. No dependable germination percentage or juvenile period was located.[[#cite_note-3|[3]]] == Flowering, fruiting, and harvest == Harvest fully colored pink-to-red fruits before they soften or split. PROSEA reports that fruit ripens about four to five months after flowering in Java and gives a historical yield range of roughly 40โ100 kg per tree per year; neither figure should be treated as a universal schedule or guarantee. == Fruit and uses == The fruit may be eaten raw, although acidity or astringency often makes it more useful in jams, syrups, preserves, and cooked preparations. Do not confuse the crop interval after flowering with years to first fruit.[[#cite_note-1|[1]]] == Photos == == References == * โ [1] Kew, Plants of the World Online: Flacourtia inermis. * โ [2] PROSEA species record: Flacourtia inermis. * โ [3] USDA GRIN: Flacourtia inermis. == Image credits == * Flacourtia inermis.jpg โ K Hari Krishnan, CC BY-SA 3.0. * Flacourtia inermis 22727928.jpg โ Al Kordesch, CC0. * Flacourtia inermis 23849653.jpg โ Ong Jyh Seng, CC BY-SA 4.0.
