== Fruit and uses == [[File:YvΓ‘ namichai.(Eugenia aggregata Phyllocalyx involucratus (DC.).jpg|thumb|left|260px|Ripe fruit of the Cherry of the Rio Grande. Photo via Wikimedia Commons.]] The fruit is eaten fresh and can also be made into jam, jelly, juice, or fermented drinks. Its thin skin and soft, juicy flesh make it a poor candidate for long-distance shipping. The flavor is usually described as sweet to subacid, with variation among seedlings and local selections.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]] The tree is also used as an ornamental and can be maintained as a compact specimen or hedge. Its slow growth, attractive bark, glossy foliage, and manageable size make it suitable for containers when given a large root volume and regular moisture.
