== Flowering, fruiting, and harvest == Flowers occur in terminal and axillary two- to six-flowered cymes and range from purple or blue to mauve or pink.[[#cite_note-1|[1]]] Fruits are small and lobed, changing from green toward orange, orange-red, yellow or red as they mature.[[#cite_note-1|[1]]] A December field observation in Kenya recorded orange-brown ripe fruit on a large shrub, but that single observation does not establish a universal season or harvest date.[[#cite_note-3|[3]]] For a cultivated plant, fruit should be assessed by its color change and softening on the individual plant rather than by a calendar date. Bearing age, yield, pollination biology and storage life should be recorded for each provenance instead of treated as fixed species values.
