== Flowering, fruiting, and harvest == Flowers and new leaves generally appear in April–May in the Himalayan cycle, followed by fruit ripening most often from October through December.[[#cite_note-7|[7]]] Most fruit is borne on the previous year's growth, so pruning should preserve mature shoots intended for the next crop.[[#cite_note-3|[3]]] Pollen performance and fruit set vary among genotypes. A three-season study of ten genotypes found high variation in pollen production and performance, and concluded that the species was highly self-compatible under its test conditions. Stigma receptivity in those assays was reported around 36–72 hours after anthesis.[[#cite_note-6|[6]]] The result supports trying a single tree, but genotype and assay differences mean it should not be treated as a guarantee of identical self-fruitfulness in every planting. Harvest when the drupes have developed their dark ripe color and the fruit is fully mature. Climate shifts the calendar, so color and softness are more useful harvest cues than a fixed month outside the Himalayan source region.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]]
