== Flowering, fruiting, and harvest ==

Male and female flowers occur separately on the same plant, and insects pollinate the flowers. Provide flowering plants with access to pollinating insects and avoid treating the presence of male flowers alone as evidence that fruit will set. <sup>[[#cite_note-3|[3]]]</sup>

Fruit quality and maturity vary among cultivated forms. RHS recommends looking for characteristic fragrance and the beginning of a crack at the stalk when judging harvest readiness; these signs should be interpreted alongside the known harvest characteristics of the chosen variety. <sup>[[#cite_note-2|[2]]]</sup> Harvest timing, fruit size, rind appearance, flesh color, texture, and flavor should not be generalized from one melon type to the whole species. <sup>[[#cite_note-3|[3]]]</sup>

Common production problems listed for the species include cucumber beetles, wilts, mildews, gummy stem blight, anthracnose, and mosaic virus.
