== Propagation == Softwood cuttings under mist are a standard propagation route in muscadine production, while hardwood rooting is more variable. A two-year University of Arkansas greenhouse study tested hardwood cuttings approximately 15β20 cm long and 5β10 mm thick, with three nodes, in perlite and 0.1% IBA at 18β24 Β°C with assessment at 90 days. Its results and discussion identify collection date, storage, bottom heat, cane position, genotype, and source vineyard as relevant factors; the tested conditions do not establish one hardwood recipe for every cultivar or grower.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]] Seed propagation is useful for breeding and for producing variable seedlings rather than preserving a named vine. In University of Georgia experiments with open-pollinated Fry seed, 90 days of stratification at 4 Β°C gave the highest germination among the tested stratification periods, and alternating 32/22 Β°C germination outperformed the tested alternatives. Hydrogen peroxide and low-rate gibberellic acid helped in some treatments, whereas high gibberellic acid was detrimental; the results were treatment-specific and did not fully reproduce an earlier report of more than 90% germination.[[#cite_note-5|[5]]]
