== Propagation == Seed is collected in autumn and should not be allowed to dry before treatment. The University of Washington sheet records difficult germination, a minimum of 60 days of cold stratification, and root-crown sprout cuttings as its most successful stated vegetative method; it also lists July and August as the timing for half-ripe cuttings.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]] A Glacier National Park production protocol cleaned seed, stored it at 3β5 Β°C for up to five years, used wet-tumbling scarification, and followed it with 90 days of cold, moist stratification at 1β3 Β°C. Its reported germination was 49β75% and non-uniform under the stated nursery conditions.[[#cite_note-5|[5]]] These values belong to the named ecotype and protocol, not to every seed lot. A recent replicated experiment tested several cold-stratification periods with low-concentration acid scarification. Under its tested seed-lot and nursery conditions, one-hour acid treatment combined with 12 weeks of stratification produced an 82% germination result.[[#cite_note-7|[7]]] Acid scarification requires trained handling and appropriate laboratory or nursery safety controls; the result is not a recommendation to improvise a household acid treatment.
