== Propagation == Seed, layering, and stem cuttings are documented propagation methods. Collect ripe blue-black fruit for seed from about mid-July to late August in the University of Washington schedule. Fall sowing can provide the required chilling; when seed is not fall-sown, the USDA guidance gives 30β140 days of cold-moist stratification near 32Β°F, while the University of Washington sheet gives about 3β3.5 months at 32β36Β°F. These are source-specific propagation schedules, not a guarantee of uniform germination. [[#cite_note-7|[7]]] For dormant hardwood material, the University of Washington sheet recommends late autumn to early winter cuttings. The USDA fact sheet also lists softwood, semi-hardwood, and hardwood cuttings and notes that a heel, bottom heat, mist, or rooting hormone may improve rooting in some setups. Clean, dry seed can be stored in airtight conditions around 34β38Β°F without freezing. [[#cite_note-7|[7]]] Layering is useful when a flexible low branch is available, and it avoids the need to obtain a large amount of cutting material at once. Keep the new layer evenly moist while roots form, then separate it only after it has established an independent root system. [[#cite_note-3|[3]]]
