Sow seed in spring. Epigeal germination is associated with a dormancy that can be relieved by cold treatment; a three-month cold stratification period is given as an optional practical treatment in the cultivation account.<sup>[[#cite_note-3|[3]]]</sup> Half-ripe and mature-wood cuttings, sucker division, and layering are also described as propagation routes.<sup>[[#cite_note-2|[2]]]</sup>

Because the species is dioecious, seed-grown plants do not provide a guaranteed fruiting female. For a planned fruiting group, retain the sex identity of parent plants and use vegetative material when preserving a known plant is important. Suckers are especially relevant to management because the same root habit that makes division possible can also enlarge an established planting.<sup id="cite_ref-4">[[#cite_note-4|[4]]]</sup>
