This is a deciduous species, so seasonal leaf loss should be expected. Its native range includes temperate as well as subtropical areas, and young growth is reported to be frost-sensitive.<sup>[[#cite_note-3|[3]]]</sup> A cautious genus-level cultivation inference is to keep the root zone only moderately moist during cool, leafless periods and to increase irrigation as active growth returns, always allowing the well-drained medium to regulate the interval. Do not treat the elevation range as a hardiness rating.
