=== Soil and water === Use deep, rich, porous soil that retains moisture while allowing air movement and drainage. The Philippine Department of Agriculture guide describes wet but well-drained soil, including heavy clay amended with sand and silt, and reports good growth near river banks, canals, ponds, and lakes. Useful Tropical Plants reports an acidic preference, with pH about 5 to 6 given as a useful range. These conditions do not justify leaving young roots in stagnant water: the production guide specifically warns that standing water over seedling roots can kill them.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]][[#cite_note-3|[3]]]
