Pomegranate in the wild grows on rocky hillsides, valley floors, and along seasonal watercourses where soils are often loamy, sandy, or gravelly and well drained. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, including moderately clayey ground, provided the root zone does not remain waterlogged. A neutral to slightly alkaline reaction is tolerated well, and the species handles mildly saline conditions better than most fruit trees. The main risk in cultivation is heavy, airless clay or permanently wet ground, which promotes root disease.<sup>[[#cite_note-2|[2]]]</sup>
