== Cultivation == Avocado needs warmth, full sun, and a root zone that remains oxygenated after irrigation or rain. Choose the warmest available site that does not flood, and protect young trees from strong wind. Florida extension guidance gives a mature landscape size of roughly 9β20 m and recommends planting well away from buildings and other trees unless the tree will be pruned regularly.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]] === Soil === The native habitat includes cloud forests and lower rainforest slopes with well-drained soils. In cultivation, avocado tolerates many soil types when drainage is reliable, including the sandy and limestone soils described by UF/IFAS for Florida. Continuously wet or flooded soil reduces growth and yield, promotes nutrient problems and dieback, and greatly increases the risk of ''Phytophthora'' root infection. On a site that remains wet after rain, plant on a large mound or another raised, freely draining position rather than treating saturation as a normal water requirement.[[#cite_note-1|[1]]][[#cite_note-2|[2]]] === Sun and humidity === Full sun gives the best growth and fruit production. The species comes from humid tropical to subtropical environments, but humid air does not compensate for poorly aerated soil. Maintain airflow around the canopy and shelter the tree from persistent wind because the limbs are brittle and can break under wind or heavy crop loads. Young trees need protection from temperature extremes while they establish.[[#cite_note-1|[1]]][[#cite_note-2|[2]]] === Seasonal changes === Some varieties lose their leaves briefly before or during flowering. Flowering and fruit maturity depend on the race, cultivar, rootstock, latitude, rainfall, and temperature rather than on one universal calendar. In Florida, UF/IFAS lists variety-dependent maturity from June through March. In a cooler subtropical climate, protect the tree during freeze events and expect cold injury or delayed flowering even when a mature tree survives. Keep irrigation regular during establishment and fruit development, but do not maintain a saturated root zone during wet periods.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]]
