=== Soil and water === In its native and long-cultivated range, the tree occurs in warm humid lowlands, secondary evergreen forest, fallow land, and gardens, from sea level to about 1,200 m. It can grow in soils with substantial clay or sand and on calcareous ground, but moisture must remain available through the dry season. A deep, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage and a generous organic surface layer is a practical garden target. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]] Water young trees through dry spells and mulch broadly without burying the trunk. The species tolerates a wide rainfall range, but the documented requirement for dry-season moisture means that drought-prone sites need irrigation or naturally retentive soil. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]]
