== Cultivation == === Soil and water === Choose a sunny site with soil that drains reliably after irrigation or rain. NMSU's species guide treats site selection and irrigation as central management decisions for jujube, while research on Chinese jujube found that soil and meteorological factors influenced growth, fruit number per bearing shoot and measured fruit-quality traits.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]] Avoid treating a regional production range as a universal irrigation schedule: soil texture, rainfall, cultivar and crop load all change water demand. During establishment, keep the root zone supplied without leaving it persistently waterlogged. Once the tree is established, adjust irrigation to rainfall, soil drainage and the stage of shoot growth and fruit development. Site- and weather-responsive irrigation is more appropriate than a single calendar prescription. === Sun and humidity === Use full sun where the canopy can dry and ripen fruit well. Jujube is cultivated in regions with strong seasonal sun, and the review of Chinese production describes broad sunshine and rainfall ranges rather than one narrow climate envelope.[[#cite_note-3|[3]]] Good airflow is useful in a dense canopy, but the packet does not establish a species-specific humidity threshold. Do not transfer a precise tolerance or yield expectation from another ''Ziziphus'' species. === Seasonal changes === Plan irrigation and pruning around the warm-season growth cycle. Leaf-out, flowering, fruit maturation and defoliation are distinct phenological stages used in a 2021 investigation of Chinese jujube cultivars; the study also found that soil and meteorological factors affected growth and fruit quality.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]] Reduce unnecessary irrigation as growth slows and soil stays wet, but protect newly planted trees from drought while roots establish. Pruning is most useful when timed to the tree's shoot and fruiting structure. NMSU summarizes the practical rule βone cut stops, two cuts sprout,β recommends different cuts for young trees, and notes that older trees may need little annual pruning; it also cautions that detailed pruning studies are limited.[[#cite_note-5|[5]]]
