== Cultivation == === Soil and water === Use a sharply draining planting site or container medium. Native and horticultural accounts associate the species with alkaline limestone loams, clays, and caliche as well as rocky semiarid ground. It is considered drought tolerant and low-water once established, but wet conditions are a poor fit: fresh-seed seedlings are vulnerable to damping-off and root rot, so irrigation should not leave the root zone persistently saturated. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]][[#cite_note-3|[3]]][[#cite_note-4|[4]]] === Sun and humidity === Full sun is the most direct cultivation match, while part shade is also supported by the plant accounts. The Forest Service synthesis records shade tolerance, which makes a bright, well-ventilated position preferable when full sun is not available. The semiarid native setting supports avoiding stagnant, continuously wet conditions rather than maintaining a high-humidity environment. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]][[#cite_note-3|[3]]] === Seasonal changes === Flowering timing varies with source and region: institutional accounts place it from February through June, with March–April also reported. Fruit maturation is generally described from late July through September, with August–September given in the Forest Service synthesis. Keep the root zone well drained through cool or wet periods and adjust irrigation to rainfall rather than maintaining a fixed schedule. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]][[#cite_note-3|[3]]]
