== Cultivation == === Soil and water === In its native southeastern range, small-flowered pawpaw occurs in dry pine and oak woods and thickets. Begin with loose, well-drained soil that can remain evenly moist without staying saturated; the documented habitat also includes moist-to-dry conditions. Avoid routine root disturbance, because the species develops a long taproot and is difficult to move once established. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]] === Sun and humidity === Partial shade is suitable while a plant establishes, and established plants can tolerate full sun. A site with good air movement and regular soil moisture during establishment is a practical starting point, while the species' association with dry southeastern woods argues against permanently wet soil. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]] === Seasonal changes === The species is deciduous. In a central-Florida study, flowering extended from mid-February through the end of March, while the North Carolina profile lists the fruit display and harvest period as July through September. Timing will shift with latitude and local weather; reduce irrigation as the plant enters its cool-season leafless period, but do not allow a newly planted specimen to dry severely while roots are establishing. [[#cite_note-4|[4]]][[#cite_note-2|[2]]]
