== Description == The plant is usually a 0.5β1.5 m multi-stemmed shrub; the USDA NRCS guide separately reports a 3β6 ft range. Stems are spineless and glandular. Leaves have resin glands beneath them, and the flowers hang in racemes; Missouri field material describes clusters of 6β15 flowers.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]][[#cite_note-3|[3]]] The fruit is a smooth, black, ovoid berry about 10 mm across, borne in drooping clusters and containing numerous seeds.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]][[#cite_note-3|[3]]] Native settings include swamps, stream banks, wet meadows, fens, moist ravines, canyons, and open woods from low elevations to about 1700 m. That distribution points to a plant of cool, seasonally variable sites with dependable soil moisture, not a shrub that normally depends on arid exposure.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]]
