The plant is a vigorous vine that climbs by means of tendrils and can cover a substantial trellis. Leaves are alternate and usually three-lobed, with glossy upper surfaces. The flowers are large and conspicuous, with white petals and sepals surrounding a purple, white, and green corona. The fruit is a berry, round to oval, with a tough rind that is purple, reddish purple, or yellow at maturity. Inside is aromatic orange to yellow pulp containing many black or brown seeds.
