== Description == [[File:Musa acuminata kz01.jpg|thumb|left|240px|''Musa acuminata'' in cultivation at Estufa Fria, Lisbon. The file is categorized for the species and its flowers; it does not represent native habitat. Photo by Krzysztof Ziarnek, Kenraiz, CC BY-SA 4.0.]] The apparent trunk is a pseudostem made from tightly overlapping leaf sheaths arising from a corm or rhizome. Large paddle-shaped leaves form the crown, and the plant commonly grows in a clump as new shoots arise from the underground base. A mature plant produces one terminal inflorescence; female flowers occur toward the base of the inflorescence and male flowers toward the distal bud.[[#cite_note-3|[3]]][[#cite_note-4|[4]]] Wild fruit is a berry with numerous hard seeds and relatively little edible pulp. Through selection, hybridization, chromosome changes, and vegetative propagation, cultivated banana groups developed fruit with greatly reduced or absent seeds. Cavendish is a well-known cultivated group associated with ''M. acuminata'', while plantains and many cooking bananas commonly involve hybrid ancestry with ''Musa balbisiana'' rather than representing this species alone.[[#cite_note-5|[5]]][[#cite_note-6|[6]]]
