== Description == The plant is a vigorous twiner with ternate to triternate leaves. Its functionally unisexual flowers are dark chocolate-purple; male flowers are borne in drooping spikes, while female flowers are solitary. The fruit is oblong to cylindrical, with a thin peel, pale to white pulp and flattened black seeds.<sup id="cite_ref-4">[[#cite_note-4|[4]]]</sup> The open fruit study examined material published under the synonym ''Lardizabala biternata''; under the accepted-name treatment above, its measurements are used here as evidence for this taxon rather than as evidence for a separate species.<sup>[[#cite_note-1|[1]]]</sup><sup id="cite_ref-2">[[#cite_note-2|[2]]]</sup>
