== Description == [[File:Choerospondias axillaris (Anacardiaceae) at Sim's Park, Coonoor.JPG|220px|right|''Choerospondias axillaris'' at Sim's Park, Coonoor, India]] The tree is fast-growing, light-demanding and deciduous, reaching about 20 m in horticultural accounts and to 25 m with a trunk to about 50 cm diameter in Thai forest material.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]][[#cite_note-5|[5]]] The bark is greyish-brown and exudes a sticky, colourless resin that blackens on exposure. Leaves are imparipinnate, 30β40 cm long with four to fifteen pairs of leaflets, and turn red before falling.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]] The boiled young leaves are edible, a use recorded from northern Thailand.[[#cite_note-5|[5]]] Flowers are small (0.3β0.5 cm), yellowish or red, in terminal or axillary panicles on male trees and in racemes on female trees; the species is mostly dioecious, with occasional bisexual flowers.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]] Nepali growers call the pistillate trees pothi lapsi (flowers with empty anthers) and the staminate trees bhale lapsi (flowers without a gynoecium).[[#cite_note-6|[6]]] The fruit is a fleshy ovoid drupe with a single hard pyrene marked with four to five depressions, each holding a flattened brown seed.[[#cite_note-5|[5]]] In measured Thai material drupes averaged 25.3 Γ 22.4 Γ 22.6 mm and ripened from grey-green to yellow; a Vietnamese description records a red drupe about 1.5 Γ 2.5 cm with acidic edible flesh and five apical pores on the stone, so colour and size vary with provenance.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]][[#cite_note-5|[5]]] Japanese plants are sometimes separated as ''Choerospondias axillaris'' var. japonica.[[#cite_note-4|[4]]]
