== Description == This is a spreading, often evergreen plant with numerous stems, fleshy rounded leaves and hooked spines. The flowers are fragrant and about 2β3 inches across. In marginal climates, winter leaf loss can occur even though the plant is generally described as evergreen. [[#cite_note-2|[2]]] A deep, sturdy root system is described for the species, and the primary study's introduction describes branches up to 3 m. [[#cite_note-3|[3]]] The combination of deep rooting and sprawling top growth is consistent with a plant suited to open, dry sites rather than a compact understory habit.
