== Description == [[File:Artocarpus altilis kz01.jpg|thumb|left|240px|Breadfruit canopy and branches at Jardín de Aclimatación de la Orotava. Photo by Krzysztof Ziarnek, Kenraiz, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.]] Breadfruit develops a broad crown and can become a large tree in the ground. The trunk may be straight and cylindrical or buttressed, and the bark is described as smooth. Leaves are alternate and highly variable, ranging from entire to deeply lobed; they may be large, glossy, and lighter or reddish-hairy beneath. The species is monoecious: male flowers are borne in club-shaped spikes, while female flowers are grouped into rounded inflorescences that develop into the syncarp.[[#cite_note-2|[2]]][[#cite_note-3|[3]]] Fruit size, surface texture, flesh color, and seed presence vary among varieties. Feedipedia reports fruits about 10 to 30 cm in diameter and 0.25 to 6 kg, with yellow to green skin and starchy cream to yellow flesh. The commonly cultivated seedless forms should not be treated as interchangeable with seeded breadfruit or with breadnut, a related seeded taxon often discussed alongside it.[[#cite_note-3|[3]]]
